Paris' iconic Eiffel Tower is lit up in pink for October to highlight a planned month-long series of events in support of the fight against breast cancer. Duration: 00:35
Thalie Martini, CEO of Breast Cancer UK, joins France 24 for Pink October, as we shine a light on the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide: breast cancer. 'We've actually seen a doubling of cases in the past 50 years,' and so Ms. Martini's key mission is to raise awareness on the importance of proactivity: action and prevention. 'For us at Breast Cancer UK,' explains Ms. Martini, 'we have a really positive, empowering message. And that is that over 25 percent of those cases could actually be prevented through lifestyle changes.' Ms. Martini is heartened to see that 'the stigma (of breast cancer) is less of an issue now than it ever was before, so all the more reason to take action now.'
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Benjamin Anderson, WHO Medical Officer leading the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), joins France 24 to share rich insight into breast cancer awareness, prevention, early diagnosis and detection, and effective treatment. Like with any disease, explains Dr. Anderson, "there are certain risk factors that we can control: weight control, exercise, avoiding excess use of alcohol, avoiding tobacco... These are all things that will help."

October is breast cancer awareness month, a chance to stack the odds in women's favor by encouraging testing and raising money for research. But it's about so much more than that.

On the occasion of Pink October, an operation intended to raise awareness and support research around breast cancer, we focus on Togo, where breast cancer is a real public health concern. Almost 3,000 Togolese women die each year from this disease, however many could have been saved with early detection. FRANCE 24's Emmanuelle Sodji and Raphael N'Talecom report from Togo.
