On Friday, Joe Biden said he strongly considered Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont to be his labor secretary. However, after Democrats regained control of the senate, both men decided against the move. "I did give serious consideration on nominating my friend Bernie Sanders." Biden said. "I'm confident he could have done a fantastic job." Biden chose Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as his pick for labor Secretary.
(CNN) President-elect Joe Biden will introduce former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg as his nominee for transportation secretary at an event in Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday. Buttigieg's selection also represents the first time the President-elect has tapped one of his former Democratic presidential opponents to join his administration as a Cabinet secretary. The role of transportation secretary is expected to play a central part in Biden's push for a bipartisan infrastructure package. The former mayor is seen as a rising star in the Democratic primary and rose to national prominence during the 2020 Democratic primary.
On Friday, President-elect Joe Biden said he expects his January 20 inauguration to be a "more imaginative" virtual event. Business Insider reports the event will be much like the 2020 DNC. "It is highly unlikely that there will be a million people on the mall, going all the way down to the [Lincoln] Memorial," Biden said. The decision is in stark contrast to that made by President Trump. Trump began his term in 2017 by arguing about the number of spectators at his inauguration.
Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina is a close ally of Joe Biden. Clyburn said Biden has fallen short in nominating Black figures to top positions in the administration, according to The Hill. "There is only one Black woman so far ... I want to see where the process leads to, what it produces. But so far it's not good." Black voters overwhelmingly backed Biden in both the Democratic primaries and the general election. Business Insider reports that many lawmakers and activists would like to see Black figures represented in key Cabinet positions.
