CNN reports Biden's transition team is beginning to turn his campaign-trail promises into plans he can implement early in his presidency. Sources say Biden's first focus is likely to be the worsening coronavirus pandemic. He is set to name a 12-person coronavirus task force on Monday. Biden intends to rejoin the Paris climate accord, a landmark international deal to combat climate change that Trump exited in 2017. The president-elect has also said he would rejoin the World Health Organization, which President Donald Trump moved to withdraw from this year.
Dr. Anthony Fauci is in hot water with the White House for speaking out in an interview, published Saturday, about the state of COVID-19 cases in the US. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases warned that the US needed to make an 'abrupt change' in its handling of the pandemic. White House spokesperson Judd Deere sternly rebuked Fauci for making 'his political leanings known by praising the president's opponent.' Business Insider reports that for the first time since the outset of the pandemic, the US logged nearly 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day. President Donald Trump has continued to falsely blame the rise in cases on a rise in testing--and media coverage.
Confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney-Barrett may be put on the back burner for the time being. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a halt of the proceedings after two Senate Judiciary Committee members tested positive for COVID-19. GOP Senators Thom Tillis and Mike Lee said Friday they had tested positive for the virus after President Trump announced his diagnosis. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated the process would move forward as expected after Lee revealed his diagnosis. However, Business Insider reports McConnell has not commented since Sen. Tillis's announcement.
