The United States will announce "sweeping" new sanctions against Russia a year after President Vladimir Putin ordered the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the White House says. "The United States will implement sweeping sanctions against key sectors that generate revenue for Putin," Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters on the eve of the anniversary of the war's start. The US will join the EU and UK in sanctioning Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as the European Union and UK did, over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki says at a briefing. SOUNDBITE
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tells reporters the US and its allies have "taken a number of actions to impose costs on the Lukashenko regime in Belarus." The EU and the US have both targeted dozens of individuals and entities over a brutal crackdown on opposition since Lukashenko claimed victory in elections last August deemed fraudulent by the West. The 27-nation bloc and London added seven officials -- including the defence and transport ministers of Belarus -- to their sanctions blacklists for the grounding of a Ryanair jet last month.
