Yangon, Jul 19 (EFE/EPA).-Myanmar's shadow National Unity Government (NUG), in opposition to the military junta, has requested urgent humanitarian assistance from the United Nations to tackle the escalating Covid-19 crisis in the country.The NUG, formed after the coup by politicians and activists opposed to the military regime, called for international emergency help to deal with the new wave of the virus that has "spiraled out of control with a death toll that is increasing daily under the mismanagement of the coup council," it said in a letter to the UN on Sunday night.The opposition group, which declares itself the legitimate government and maintains its loyalty to deposed leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said that the official data issued by the military junta is just "the tip of the iceberg" due to lack of systemic data collection, limited testing and the inability to access and deploy vaccines. India on Monday crossed 17 million coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic, as it battles a second wave of infections with record numbers of fresh cases and deaths for the fifth consecutive day. In the last 24 hours, the South Asian country registered 352,991 new cases and 2,812 deaths, the highest numbers recorded so far, according to the Ministry of Health. This brings the total to 17.3 million cases and 195,123 deaths since the start of the pandemic in the country of 1.35 billion inhabitants.
