Genoa City, Sep 10 (EFE/EPA).- According to the most recent monthly Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer, a survey of 400 US agricultural producers, farmers are optimistic about their yields as some drought areas have received precipitation. There is also optimism that land values will continue to rise. As climate change drives drought, and the rising global population drives food demand, the world's food security is ever more precarious. But struggling farmers may find relief from the soaring temperatures from the sun itself--and the technology that harnesses its power. HuffPost reports students at the University of Arizona noticed that vegetables grown under the cover of solar panels flourished during the hottest summer on record. The observation provided food for thought for Prof. Greg Barron-Gafford’s research in 'agrivoltaics': growing food and generating solar energy on the same land. The concept could fulfill the need for land on which to build new solar installations while also helping farmers stay afloat. It’s a case where one plus one could equal more than two. Around 80 new tractors arrive at a protest held by Italian farmers on the outskirts of Rome to pressure the government to improve their working conditions. Italy is one of a number of countries across Europe where farmers have staged weeks of demonstrations to demand lower fuel taxes, better prices for their products and an easing of EU environmental regulations that they say makes it more difficult to compete with cheaper foreign produce. A stranded cargo ship causes river traffic to be halted on the Rhine in western Germany after suffering a technical fault, authorities say. The incident comes at a time when water transport is already suffering as the result of drought, which has caused the water in the river to drop to a level considered inaccessible for shipping. The vessel is stuck at St Goar and Oberwesel, between the cities of Mainz and Koblenz, river police say, adding that they expect to clear the stricken ship within a day. IMAGES
