Description

Rio de Janeiro, Apr 13 (EFE).- Appearing as the backdrop in the music videos of pop stars such as Michael Jackson and Alicia Keys, a favela in Rio de Janeiro is relying on a group of residents who, due to a lack of public services, clean and disinfect the famous neighborhood to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Located in the south of Rio, the Santa Marta (or Dona Marta) favela has joined the fight against SARS-CoV-2 in Brazil, a country in which 1,328 deaths and 23,430 confirmed cases have already been recorded. Some of its residents have organized themselves to disinfect the common areas of this neighborhood with a fifth-generation quaternary ammonium, an expensive product that has already been used in other countries for the same purpose and which they were able to afford thanks to donations.
