A ECOUTER Ces virus ancestraux que le climat fait resurgir

Et si la prochaine crise sanitaire venait des régions froides où le réchauffement climatique libère des virus enfouis depuis des millénaires ? Nos Alpes sont-elles à l’abri ? Les récentes découvertes notamment dans l’Arctique laissent songeur. Le pergelisol, ce sous-sol gelé est un milieu idéal pour leur conservation de ces microorganismes, à l’abri de la lumière. Or la fonte accélérée a pour effet de les faire resurgir alors même que l’accès facilité à ces régions attisent les convoitises minières. D’où de sérieux risques de mettre en contact ces microbes en sommeil avec des êtres humains dépourvus d’immunité pour s’en défendre. Les explications de Chantal Abergel, professeur de génomique à l’Université Aix-Marseille (CNRS) qui dirige, avec Jean-Michel Claverie le laboratoire Information génomique et structurale de l’Institut méditerranéen de microbiologie. On leur doit la découverte de plusieurs virus géants, datant de 30 000 à 40 000 ans, dans le pergélisol de Sibérie. Interview. A lire par ailleurs en dernière page.
