Nearly 25,000 prisoners granted amnesty in Myanmar to mark New Year

Yangon, Apr 17 (EFE/EPA).- Myanmar President Win Myint on Friday granted an amnesty to nearly 25,000 prisoners to mark Thingyan, Myanmar's New Year.The country grants amnesty to thousands of prisoners once a year during the New Year holiday. However, this year’s number is reportedly the largest on record amid speculations that the government is trying to ease pressure on overcrowded jails due to growing fear of the coronavirus pandemic.
