Washington DC, Jun 2 (EFE/EPA).- Thousands of people protesting police violence against African Americans remained on the streets of the US capital Tuesday minutes ahead of the 7.00 pm curfew announced by the municipal government.The crowds appeared to be significantly larger than on Monday, when federal law enforcement personnel resorted to tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades to clear peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square, next to the White House, so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church to be photographed holding the Bible.The demonstrators who came out Tuesday marched toward the White House, but found Lafayette Park surrounded by a fence 2.5m (8ft) high. Washington D.C., Jun 2 (EFE/EPA).- The police fired tear gas canisters on Monday to clear out protesters outside the White House on the fourth straight day of protests in Washington D.C. over George Floyd's death and police brutality.The 46-year-old Floyd died on May 25 when a Minneapolis police officer - Derek Chauvin - knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes after Floyd had been handcuffed and placed facedown on the pavement. During the first several minutes, Floyd complained that he could not breathe and pleaded for help, but then he lost consciousness, although Chauvin remained kneeling on his neck for another several minutes.Passersby made videos of the incident with their cellphones, begged the officers to stop kneeling on Floyd - to no avail - and posted the videos to the social networks, and these recordings show Chauvin kneeling with his full body weight on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes both before and after he lost consciousness.The videos went viral and have sparked days - and nights - of protests, rioting and looting in most major US cities, including Minneapolis.
