Hong Kong to postpone legislative elections, according to media reports

Description

Hong Kong, Jul 31 (EFE/EPA).- The Hong Kong Government could announce Friday the postponement of legislative elections scheduled for Sep. by a year, due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city as reported by local RTHK television.Although not yet official, the rumor is persistent in the local press and the head of the local government, Carrie Lam, has already announced a press conference scheduled for 6pm local time (10am GMT).The decision - which is unprecedented in Hong Kong - would have the support of the pro-Beijing government, since many of its most prominent politicians consider that a fair election cannot be organized under these conditions.(Camera: JEROME FAVRE)FOOTAGE: SOUNDBITES OF HONG KONG ACTIVIST JOSHUA WONG (IN ENGLISH).
