On the Russian Far East island of Sakhalin, it's totally normal to open your front door and find a wall of snow on the other side. One local tried to kick down the wall of snow, only to poke a small hole through it, but he was able to see his barking dogs on the other side. Winter in Sakhalin usually dumps between 2 and 9 feet of snow on the island.
Residents of Uglegorsk on Sakhalin Island jumped from fourth story windows directly into huge snowbanks last week, plunging harmlessly into snow which was taller than they were. The equivalent of more than one month’s snowfall fell in just 48 hours on December 25 and 26, causing huge clumps of snow to build up all over the island.
Video from Tuesday shows the aftermath of a huge snowstorm that hit the eastern coast of Sakhalin Island, dumping over a yard of snow across the city and up to two yards in some places. Locals had to make their way through huge snowdrifts with blizzard winds whipping their faces while trudging through knee-deep snow. A few thrill-seeking residents flipping backwards off cars and even jumped off balconies into piles of white fluffy snow in a sport they called 'extreme diving.'
Border guards patrolling the Kerch Strait picked up a man sailing a hand-made raft of plastic bottles on Wednesday and brought him into custody. Authorities noticed the man's ludicrous floating device while patrolling the water around a mile from the coastline. It turned out that the man, a 53-year-old native of Tashkent, was attempted to make the crossing from the Russian mainland to the Crimean peninsula via his rickety, hand-made contraption. Police gave the traveller a warning for violating the marine travel laws and sent him on his way.
