Surges of COVID-19 patients are threatening to overwhelm hospitals across the nation. CNN reports at least 123,639 people across the country were in the hospital with the novel coronavirus on Saturday. The COVID Tracking Project says that marks the 32nd consecutive day that the number of hospitalizations has exceeded 100,000. Cases skyrocketed after the Thanksgiving holiday. The fallout form Christmas and New Year's celebrations are still unfolding. Johns Hopkins University data reveals that as of Saturday, more than 20.4 million people have been infected with the virus in the US. At least 350,186 people have died from the illness.
First lady Melania Trump wanted to spread some seasonal cheer to sick children on Tuesday when she visited the Children's National Hospital. CNN reports she continued her annual tradition of visiting them, despite the coronavirus pandemic and record cases in Washington, DC. However, Mrs. Trump also broke the hospital's stated mask policy when she removed her mask to read a holiday book to children. While she arrived in the hospital's main atrium wearing a mask, she removed it when she took her seat in front of a tree. She did practice social distancing. However, the hospital's policy specifically requires all visitors to wear a mask.
In the past two days, the US has reported more than 220,000 positive coronavirus tests. The new cases bring the past week's total to more than 660,000 new cases of COVID-19. The US reported more than 121,000 new coronavirus infections Thursday. The staggering number broke the daily case record of over 100,000 cases t set just 24 hours ago. According to CNN, Wednesday marked the first time the US hit a six-figure number of infections. As cases soar, the number of hospitalized Americans is surging, with more than 53,000 patients across the US.
Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie was released from the hospital on Saturday. Business Insider reports Christie emerged after a week-long stay to fight COVID-19. Christie aided President Trump in debate preparations and attended the White House Rose Garden event announcing the president's Supreme Court nominee. Dr. Anthony Fauci has since labeled the gathering at the Rose Garden 'a super-spreader event.' Christie said that he would reveal more about his current condition in the coming days.
