On Wednesday, NBC News announced that President Donald Trump will participate in a town hall on Thursday evening. The town hall will take place at the same time as his 2020 Democratic opponent's Joe Biden's on ABC News, which was announced last week. The change of schedule came after Trump refused to take part in a second presidential debate virtually. The commission for Presidential debates suggested a virtual debate out of concern for Trump's health after his coronavirus diagnosis. Both candidates will appear on separate stages at 8 p.m.
Not every member of the Republican party has accepted the outcome of the 2020 presidential race--including President Donald J. Trump. But according to Business Insider, Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah has. In fact, Romney has called on all Americans to support the incoming administration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. On CNN's 'State of the Union' on Sunday, Romney told Jake Tapper that Trump 'will accept the inevitable' regarding the outcome, but would not do so gracefully. Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel on Sunday issued a warning to Republicans attempting to distance themselves from President Donald Trump. According to Business Insider, her comments follow the tweet-lashing Trump recently gave to Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, of Nebraska. At a constituent town hall meeting, leaked audio showed Sasse criticizing Trump and saying that the coming election would be a 'bloodbath' for the GOP. Any Republican that doesn't recognize that running with the president is going to help them is hurting themselves in the long run. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate. Polling shows they are at risk of losing it in November's general election.
ABC's coverage of Joe Biden's town hall averaged 13.9 million viewers on Thursday night. The viewer count easily surpassed the Nielsen ratings for President Trump's town hall on NBC. The Trump town hall was simulcast by two of NBC's cable channels, MSNBC and CNBC. Biden's viewership beat out all of Trump's viewers from NBC, MSNBC and CNBC combined. Trump's gross audience across all three channels was 13 million, about one million fewer than Biden's audience.
