Judge Orders Release Of Death Certificates For Hurricane Maria

Description

A judge in Puerto Rico ordered the government to release death certificates for those who died during and after Hurricane Maria. The ruling follows two petitions that were consolidated into one case. Puerto Rico's Center for Investigative Journalism and CNN sued Puerto Rico's health department for withholding that information. Judge Lauracelis Roques Arroyo wrote in her decision that the government's argument for withholding the death certificates was invalid, because the health department believed releasing that information violated privacy. Judge Arroyo added that the Puerto Rican Demographic Registry has seven days to compile the information for CPI PR and CNN.
