Vokswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak - First Test Drive

Description

Eight months ago, the Volkswagen Design team took on the multifaceted challenge of designing a highly emotional, yet perfectly functional race car for the most famous hill climb in the world. The result is the I.D. R Pikes Peak - the brand’s first fully-electric racing car - which will compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2018. The design development for the racing car participating in the “Unlimited” category started in October 2017 with the proverbial blank sheet of paper. In the initial briefing, Bischoff and his colleagues didn’t get much info from the engineers other than the desired length, width and height of the chassis of the I.D. R Pikes Peak.

  • Going downhill – the Audi e-tron prototype braking test at Pikes Peak

The Audi e-tron prototype combines enormous power and high efficiency. With a system output of up to 300 kW, the full-size SUV with a fully electric drive accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in less than six seconds. In the WLTP test cycle, it covers more than 400 kilometers (248.5 mi) on one battery charge. One important factor for the long range is the most innovative recuperation concept among the competitors. The electric SUV proved this with an impressive performance at Pikes Peak.

  • Audi e-tron prototype extreme - Recuperation test at Pikes Peak

At 4,301 meters Pikes Peak looms high in the southern Rocky Mountains. The best place to test the unique and most innovative recuperation concept of the Audi e-tron prototype. The scenario: each kilometer downhill brings around an additional kilometer in range. So on its 31 kilometer downhill drive the electric SUV feeds so much energy back to the battery that it can cover approximately the same distance again. Unrivalled!

"Volkswagen's latest motorsport project has been named: I.D. R Pikes Peak is the title of the all-electric prototype racing car, with which Volkswagen will compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on 24th June 2018 in Colorado, USA. The four-wheel drive sports car combines its ambassadorial role for the future, electric I.D. family with the sportiest range of Volkswagen products, the R GmbH models. At the same time, it is also the first step towards an intensification of the cooperation between Volkswagen R and Volkswagen Motorsport. The Volkswagen brand plans to offer more than 20 fully-electric cars by 2025. Manufacturing of the first production model in the I.D. family is scheduled to start at the end of 2019 in Zwickau, in the Saxony region of Germany."
