Judge Amy Coney Barrett is to be the next Supreme Court Justice, filling the seat left by the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Business Insider reports the Senate on Monday voted to confirm Coney Barrett along party lines in a 52-48 vote. Only one Republican, US Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, voted against Barrett's nomination. The 48-year-old was confirmed just eight days before Election Day, and to vociferous opposition from Senate Democrats. Despite US President Donald Trump's vocal push for a new COVID-19 stimulus package, it appears unlikely that one will come before Election Day. Business Insider reports that one of the pivotal issues in the Georgia campaigns was the prospect of $2,000 COVID-19 stimulus checks. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked the $2,000 checks. Reports in December suggested that fears over Georgia prompted him to back $600 checks instead of blocking them entirely. A fierce push by President Trump for $2,000 checks put the issue back on the table. McConnell led the Senate GOP in killing the issue.
The homes of both US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have been vandalized. CNN reports the incidents took place after the Senate stalled Friday on increasing stimulus checks to $2,000 for millions of Americans. Pelosi and McConnell are the two highest-ranking members of Congress. After McConnell's Louisville home was marked with graffiti early Saturday morning, the Kentucky Republican denounced the incident as a "radical tantrum." CNN reports police say an unidentified suspect or suspects vandalized one of Pelosi's homes in San Francisco. The person or persons painted graffiti on the garage door and left a pig's head on the sidewalk.
President Trump has demanded to see a list of which Congressional Republicans acknowledged President-elect Joe Biden's election win. According to Business Insider, only 27 GOP Senators and House members have acknowledged Biden's victory. Others have chosen to stand by Trump and his unfounded claims of voter fraud. Still other party members, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, haven't yet confirmed their position, but have hinted at accepting the final result. Trump tweeted his demand on Saturday for a list of the 'RINOs,' or 'Republicans In Name Only,' following a Washington Post survey.
