Opioid Therapy May Not Always Be Effective for Treating Chronic Pain

Description

According to the National Institutes of Health Study, opioid therapy may not always be effective at treating chronic pain. A new study conducted by the NIH and Montreal's McGill University found that chronic pain limits the brain's opioid receptors. The researchers found that the impact of chronic pain on the brain and its relationship to depression also had an effect on opioid receptors. Dr. Mark Pitcher, an author of the study, added that people with chronic pain have reduced availability of opioid receptors. But they didn't know why. Dr. Pitcher added that their findings suggest how the body responds to chronic pain is partly responsible.
