The four chronic conditions lead to difficulty breathing and can be life-threatening if left untreated. The risks for chronic lung diseases among current e-cigarette users is 31% higher compared to non-users. According to UPI. former e-cigarette users have a 28% higher risk. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease causes obstructed airflow from the lungs. Asthma develops as a result of the narrowing of the airways, and chronic bronchitis is common in smokers. Emphysema is a progressive condition, also diagnosed in smokers, that causes decreased lung capacity.
South Dakota has voted to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana. According to Business Insider, it's the first time a state has voted to legalize both types of access to cannabis at the same time. Medical marijuana cards will be issued to patients with debilitating, chronic conditions--subject to a healthcare provider's recommendation. Recreational cannabis sales will be taxed at 15%. The proceeds will be used to cover the program's costs and to fund public schools and the state's general fund. Residents of the highly conservative state will be allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of cannabis for recreational use.

A new study shows that veterans who have acupuncture before surgery reported less need for opioids for pain. The pilot study was presented Monday at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2020 meeting. According to UPI, 6% of patients given opioids after surgery become dependent on them. The study reports that veterans are twice as likely to die from accidental opioid overdoses than civilians. Researchers cite this as being a crucial reason to have multiple options for treating pain. The study found that acupuncture is a safe, cost-effective alternative to opioids in some cases.
