Rio de Janeiro, Feb 21 (EFE).- Rio de Janeiro was filled Friday with joyous celebration, colorful sights and pulsating samba rhythms at the start of Carnival, an annual pre-Lenten event in Brazil that is dubbed the world's biggest party. The first "blocos" (street parties) started parading on Friday afternoon and attracted thousands of costumed revelers, including one traditional block known as Bloco das Carmelitas whose participants are known for dressing up like nuns. The party took place in the downtown hilltop neighborhood of Santa Teresa where the Carmelitas bloco originated 30 years ago, inspired by the legend of a nun who allegedly escaped from her convent to enjoy Carnival.
