Police officers maintain a cordon around the remains of three houses in a street in the town of Heysham in northwest England, the site of an overnight gas explosion, as fire crews, search and rescue teams and utilities personnel secure the site. One child died and four adults were injured in the explosion, according to police. IMAGES
Scotland First minister Nicola Sturgeon says that her thoughts are with the six people who were injured in a suspected stabbing in Glasgow, including a police officer whose condition is in "critical but stable" condition. SOUNDBITE
