"I did give serious consideration on nominating my friend Bernie Sanders." Biden said. "I'm confident he could have done a fantastic job." Biden chose Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as his pick for labor Secretary.
(CNN) Sen. Kamala Harris broke barriers as America's first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president-elect. But after her exit in January to join the Biden administration, there will be no Black women in the Senate. Harris's departure left lawmakers and advocates urging California Gov. Gavin Newsom to choose a Black woman to replace her due to a lack of diversity in the chamber. And while his appointment on Tuesday of Secretary of State Alex Padilla as California's first Latino senator was historic, it comes with the reality that the 117th Congress will have no Black women in the upper chamber.
On Tuesday, President-elect Joe Biden promised a third round of stimulus checks. Business Insider reports Americans urgently need financial relief as the pandemic continues to hamper the economy. Biden said the actual dollar amount of the next direct payment remains "a negotiating issue." Biden added that Americans senators a round of thanks for pushing for direct payments in the latest COVID relief bill. The next COVID-19 stimulus package will extend federal unemployment assistance, Biden said. "People are desperately hurting."
Nancy Pelosi wants to be continue to be Speaker of the House. But, some left wing activist want a vote on Medicare-for-All. So, the activists are pressuring progressive lawmakers to refuse to vote for Pelosi unless she holds the first floor vote on Medicare-for-All. Business Insider reports that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is publicly rejecting those calls. AOC argues that Democrats don't have the votes to pass Medicare for All in the House.
