Salzburg (Austria), 1 Oct, (EFE/EPA), (Camera: Jorge Dastis/Christian Bruna).- The world’s longest endurance race is taking place in the shadow of the Austrian Alps in a park in Salzburg, where competitors have to run 5,000 kilometers (3,106 miles) in 52 days — more than two marathons a day. 83-year-old Elisa Forti wants to conquer the treacherous Aconcagua Mountain, the highest mountain in the Americas. Elisa, who has already crossed the Andes twice, was born in Italy but moved with her family to Argentina when she was 14 years old. She has a large family with five children, eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Known as the 'mountain of death,' Aconcagua will be far and away her biggest challenge yet.

Yesterday, the temperature dropped to a frostbitingly cold −55 °C, or −67 °F, but that didn't stop students from going to school. Just to give a sense of how cold it gets, Oymyakon's permafrost remains frozen year-round and it's responsible for coldest officially recorded temperature in the northern hemisphere, recording −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) on February 6, 1933.
