The world's newest nation, South Sudan declared independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011. Just two years later it was plunged into a devastating civil war that claimed almost 400,000 lives and displaced four million people. SOUNDBITE
South Sudan's government and rebel groups have signed a landmark peace deal aimed at ending decades of war in which hundreds of thousands have died. Cheers rang out as one by one, representatives from the transitional government and rebel groups signed the deal, a year after the peace talks began, at a ceremony in the South Sudanese capital Juba.
