Trump Draws Outcry After Disputing Puerto Rico Storm Death Toll

Description

Reuters reported that U.S. President Donald Trump disputed Puerto Rico’s official death toll of 3,000 from hurricanes last year. Trump went so far as to accuse Democrats of inflating the figure "in order to make me look as bad as possible." Last month, the death toll from Hurricane Maria was raised from 64 to 2,975. Maria was the most powerful storm to hit Puerto Rico in almost a century. The number was produced by public health experts at George Washington University in Washington in a report that was commissioned by the U.S. territory’s governor, Ricardo Rossello. Rossello responded to Trump's comments, saying Puerto Ricans “do not deserve to have their pain questioned” and backed the study.
