Gay couple speak out on surrogacy: 'It's not about exploiting someone'

Description

In this Perspective segment we're focusing on surrogacy. Our guests are David-Jean and Philippe Thareaut-Vigny, who became fathers to twin girls last year. Although a family today, the process took more than five years and was emotionally and financially demanding. Surrogacy raises difficult social, legal and moral issues around the world, such as whether the practice reduces a woman's body to a commodity. The couple travelled to the US to find a surrogate as the practice is illegal in France.

While nothing about this story appears surprising at first glance Kristiana and Denise Taylor married first in 1996, when Kristiana was still a man named Stephen. Denise and Kristiana, who was then named Stephen, married as husband and wife in Newcastle and lived together this way for 16 years. Stephan even fathered a son with Denise, whom the couple also named Stephen, until the Stephan Senior transitioned in 2012. Denise supported the change and the rest is history. The two first got together in Newcastle in 1996 when Kristiana was a man. Later, Kristiana would go on to decide that she wanted to transition to being a woman, and her wife Denise supported the decision. The couple renewed their vows after all stages of the transition operation were finished. The couple's son, Stephen, walked the two down the aisle, with friends and family coming together to celebrate the pair's happiness in their new life.
