At least nine people were killed Saturday after a train coach parked in southern India caught fire when a passenger tried to make tea, officials said. The coach, which had been detached from a train, was stationed at the Madurai railway yard in the southern state of Tamil Nadu when the fire broke out before dawn. Local media reports said the passengers had illegally smuggled aboard a gas cylinder which exploded when they tried to use it. IMAGES

Dozens of workers continue to clear the scene of Friday's three-train crash in Balasore, eastern India. Damaged carriages still lie beside the tracks and debris litters the area. Search and rescue operations for victims and survivors came to an end yesterday, the day after the accident. The collision, which has now been blamed on a signalling error, led the deaths of at least 288 people and injured a further 900. It is India's deadliest rail incident in 20 years. IMAGES
