  • Gap's Decision To Spin-Off Old Navy Could Cause A Wave Of Retailers To Follow Suit

On Thursday, Gap's announced that it would make Old Navy a separate, publicly traded company. This was a positive development as the company has seen strong sales at Old Navy, but significant weakness in the namesake Gap brand. Now, analyst tell Business Insider, other retailers could follow suit. Last summer VF Corp's decided to spin-off its Lee and Wrangler denim brands into a separate public company. The announcement came as some of its other brands, like Vans and The North Face, were generating more sales than VF Corp's denim businesses.

Prior to this quarter, the company saw seven consecutive quarters of positive comparable sales growth. The Gap brand itself is struggling — comparable sales were down 7% in the third quarter. Gap discounts nearly everything in the store, threatening margins and, ultimately, making shoppers less likely to pay full-price. It also offers a lot of the same styles and quality clothing as its sister store Old Navy, but the prices are much higher at Gap.
