Autosport International has opened its doors for 2019 – and it’s been a spectacular day of unveils already, including the European debut of Porsche’s stunning 935 ‘Moby Dick’ and a number of British Touring Car Championship cars and driver line-ups. Appearing on the Porsche stand throughout the four-day event, this very special track-only car is inspired by the famous 1970s racer. Revealed a few months ago at the ‘Rennsport Reunion’ event in California, only 77 will ever be built, each packing the same 690bhp, 3.8-litre twin-turbo flat-six and chassis underpinnings of the latest 911 GT2 RS.BAC announced Pirelli as its official tyre partner, which means its Mono single-seater sports car will run on the P Zero Trofeo R tyre. The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) announcements ramped up for the new season with Cataclean Racing unveiling its race car, a Mercedes-Benz A-Class run by Ciceley Motorsport and driven by Renault Clio UK Cup graduate, Dan Rowbottom, who will make his BTCC debut this season.AmD Tuning revealed its new livery for the team’s Honda Civics, which will be raced by Sam Tordoff and Rory Butcher in the 2019 British Touring Car Championship season, while Motorbase Performance revealed Ollie Jackson and Tom Chilton as their drivers for the upcoming season.The wraps also came off the Series Elite 2019 Jaguar XE SV Project 8 race car. This tantalising championship is a brand-new, one-make race series for over-50s, with each driver grappling with the 600hp, 200mph machine.F1 fans were in for a treat too, with the presentation of McLaren’s 2018 MCL33 F1 Car on the F1 Racing stand, alongside a full grid of cars from the summit of motorsport.
Autosport International has celebrated a spectacular second day at the NEC with an incredible line-up of star drivers taking to the Autosport Stage as the show’s dedicated trade days came to a close.Autosport Engineering wrapped things up after two highly successful days of trading from some of the world’s leading motorsport, automotive, technology defence and aerospace companies. The busy area of the show hosted some of the world’s leading component suppliers and manufacturing outlets many of which were bringing the very latest 2019 products to market.The inaugural Product Showcase Awards recognised the very best from across the engineering business. Categorised into nine categories winners included small, large and new firms from Bosch Motorsport (Energy Efficiency) for its Electric Coolant, Texense (Data & Measurement) for the Texense IRN8-WS4 and Bcomp (Innovation) for its Power Ribs.Within the main show, former F1 driver David Coulthard was present to talk about W Series, the groundbreaking women’s racing series. The ex-McLaren driver revealed that when he started karting, he did so with his younger sister Lindsey, who he – and his mother and father – believed was more naturally talented.
It’s been an action-packed final day at Autosport International with visitors treated to stars, cars and thrilling stunts within the Live Action Arena performances.Ex-F1 driver Johnny Herbert opened the show with Karun Chandhok and Billy Monger and took to the Autosport stage to discuss his British Grand Prix victory in 1995, driving after his F3000 accident and the different mindset towards understanding and appreciating risks in modern day F1, he commented:Touring car legend Andy Rouse was presented with a trophy on the main stage after being voted Motorsport News’ and Autosport’s greatest-ever British Touring Car Championship driver. The four-time champion and winner of 60 races within the category was voted the greatest by a panel of experts and drivers in celebration of the the championship’s 60 years.Billy Monger was on hand to entertain the Live Action Arena crowds in his F3 car. The show saw a mixture of high-speed demonstrations and breathtaking stunt driving from Billy, Terry Grant and a host of competition drivers. Powerful racing and performance cars offered fans an unrivalled variety of racing action, all hosted by Sky F1 Lead Commentator David Croft alongside popular social media vloggers Shmee150 and Miss Emma Walsh.Round 4 of the Le Mans Esports Series took place at the show. The two-hour endurance event comprised of both racers qualifying from online and the fastest times created across the four days at the show. Shaun Arnold triumphed and scooped the biggest share of the $10,000 prize pot, with a storming drive from pole position. The Super Final boasts a chance for the winner to take their place on the real-life Le Mans 24 Hours podium and win a share of the $160,000 prize fund. Tobin Leigh finished second and booked his place at the Super Final.
There was a concerted push south today as the 2020 BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy looked to finish the day within striking distance of the Cook Strait, ready for a leap onto the South Island tomorrow. Only first there was nearly 350km of mixed trail and highway, through the never ending hills of the Wairarapa, diving into native woodlands, crossing pastoral flatlands then a return to the spectacular east coast before finally crossing the Rimutaka Range to make camp in the bush on the edge of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. The GS riders again responded to a pre-dawn 5:30am call to breakfast, yet again finding wonder in the incredible sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, this time seen over the reef at Castlepoint. Less than a kilometre from the start they stopped for the first challenge of the day, Beach Drift. Volkswagen and its customers launched into a new era of environmentally friendly mobility and will showcase the fully electric ID.3 at IAA 2019. The first model from the MEB product line for electric vehicles demonstrates a CO2-neutral balance and impresses with the high levels of driving dynamics characteristic of electric cars. It has been fully networked and, in the ID.3 1ST special edition, enables electrically powered ranges of up to 420 kilometers (WLTP) with initially three equipment variants. All ID.3 1ST models feature the most popular battery variant that provides a usable energy content of 58 kWh. The series production version will later also offer a smaller battery option with an energy content of 45 kWh and a range of up to 330 kilometers as well as a larger battery with an energy content of 77 kWh and a maximum range of 550 kilometers. Thanks to its fast charging capability, at a charging output of 100 kW it is possible to recharge the ID.3 1ST with enough energy within 30 minutes to cover a range of around 290 kilometers (WLTP) - a significantly longer range than had previously been possible in the compact vehicle segment.Volkswagen will offer a guarantee of eight years or 160,000 kilometers on ID.3 batteries, thus safeguarding longevity. The ID.3 also signals visually that it is more than just a new model. Its visionary design clearly indicates the new era of electric mobility, while its spatial arrangement fully benefits from design advantages provided by electrically driven vehicles. With external dimensions comparable to the Golf, the ID.3 provides a vehicle interior that is larger than that in any other vehicle in its category. As the basic price for the series production model will be under €30,000 in Germany, the vehicle's price will be comparable to that of typical compact vehicles following the deduction of the anticipated government subsidies - an electric car for the masses. Particularly noteworthy is its unique price-range ratio that is possible solely as a result of Volkswagen's consistent strategic alignment towards electric vehicles and the associated scaling effects. The ID.3 will be delivered in Germany from mid-2020.
