Judge Allows Prisoner At Cold NY Jail To Be Taken To Hospital

Description

A New York judge on Monday ordered one jailed man to be taken to the hospital but denied his request for emergency bail from a Brooklyn federal detention center where heat and power have not been working for days. The law firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink LLP filed suit on Monday at U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, saying the Federal Bureau of Prisons has exposed prisoners to inhumane conditions at Metropolitan Detention Center. The suit says, “The lawsuit seeks immediate relief for the deplorable and rapidly deteriorating conditions at the facility, including sustained periods of time with little heat, light and medical care for inmates." Authorities said power and heat were restored at the prison on Sunday after an outage left more than 1,600 men and women in cold, dark cells for days. Lawyers for the inmates have said some areas of the prison were still without power on Monday. Lawyers for Dino Sanchez requested emergency bail for their client, claiming that he was receiving improper care for his chronic asthma. Judge Ann Donnelly denied the bail request but said that he was entitled to proper medical care.

In 1999, 23-year-old Jennifer Watkins was found, her body wrapped in plastic, in the stairwell of the hospital where she worked. Now, Colorado Springs police report her sexual assault and murder has finally been solved, thanks to DNA collected at the scene. Newser reports that thanks to the help of a public genetic genealogy database, cold case investigators were led to Ricky Severt. Although Severt died in a car crash in 2001, familial DNA collected from his surviving relatives shows Severt cannot be excluded as the prime suspect. Both Watkins and worked at the same hospital. And while Severt cannot be brought to justice, police are sure they've finally found their man. After all these years, we are grateful to finally give Jennifer Watkins’ family the answers they deserve. Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski
