CIA Expresses Doubts That Taliban Will Honor Promises Made In Peace Talks

Description

According to a report by Business Insider, on Tuesday, in a hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, CIA Director Gina Haspel was asked if she trusts the Taliban to uphold their promise to work with the Afghan government and never allow the country to be a safe haven for terrorists again. Haspel reportedly said, "If there were an eventual peace agreement, a very robust monitoring regime would be critical. We would still need the capability to act in our national interest if we needed to." Business Insider reports that Haspel's comments reflect concerns that a complete withdrawal of the 22,000 in the US-led coalition will allow the Taliban to regain control.
