The elections were boycotted by most opposition candidates and appear to have resulted in a very low turnout. "As we announced the day before yesterday, we do not recognise these elections," says opposition candidate Hajo Andrianainarivelo at a press conference in the capital Antananarivo. The first round of Madagascar's presidential election appears to have resulted in a very low voter turnout. Tensions are running high between incumbent Andry Rajoelina, who has voiced confidence in being re-elected, and ten opposition candidates who have called for a boycott of the vote. SOUNDBITE

Almost all opposition candidates in Madagascar have called on voters to shun a presidential election scheduled for November 16, raising concerns about the vote. "We reject this Thursday's election and ask the Malagasy people to pretend it doesn't exist," Hajo Andrianainarivelo, 56, tells a press conference in Antananarivo, speaking on behalf of a group bringing together almost all of the 12 opposition candidates in the running.
