  • Salvini says he is not worried about trial

Rome, Feb 13 (EFE) .- (Image: Jorge Ortiz) The former Italian Interior Minister and League leader, Matteo Salvini, explained on Thursday that he was calm and believed he would not be convicted for having prevented migrants aboard an Italian military ship from disembaking in Italy.FOOTAGE OF SALVINI AT AN EVENT WITH FOREIGN PRESS.SOUNDBITES OF SALVINI, AND LEAGUE'S SECOND IN COMMAND GIANCARLO GIORGETTI.Translations:Salvini:1- “It is the first press conference that I have done after being ordered to face trial, so I will observe with attention and curiosity what will happen, maintaining that I have simply done my duty, so, without any fear or worry because, I remind myself before others that article 52 of the Constitution, on which I was sworn as a minister, says that the defence of the country is a duty of every citizen, with greater reason if one is a minister. Therefore, I simply maintain that I have defended the security, borders and dignity of my country and I do not believe that this carries any condemnation.” 2- “Obviously it was a difficult game because for 70 years the left governed. We, of course, played to win. Taking 32% as the League in regionals in Emilia-Romagna was absolutely unthinkable, so centre-right has 45%. Having more was difficult. As for the fight against drugs, I don't know in Sweden, I don't know in other European countries, in Italy, it's a national emergency which is spoken about too rarely, of which politics and the media speak too rarely.” 3- “In the name of the fight against drugs, for me, every denunciation is enough. Whether traffickers are Milanese, Portuguese, Finnish, Tunisian or Swedish, I care little. The average age (of drug users) in Italy has dropped dramatically. There are communities with 14-year-old boys who aren't smoking cannabis, they're doing heroin and cocaine. A dose of cocaine outside a school, today, can be sold for 5 euros. There is no longer the economic obstacle to be able to afford it. To get closer to new customers, to new consumers, the drug market today distributes mono-doses of 5 euros of cocaine. It is terribly worrying.”Giorgetti:1- “The perspectives motivate us, since the polls continue to give us 30% of the consensus, so we are the main Italian political party. We have a duty, since I believe that all of us in this room are aware that it is a matter of time, but sooner or later it will be up to the League and Salvini to safeguard the government of the Italian Republic. ”
