Portugal, Spain plan the creation of Eurocity in the border

Vilar Formoso, Portugal, Dec 6 (EFE), (Image: Carlos García).- Portugal and Spain have taken another step in their strategy against the depopulation of their common border with the creation of a new Eurocity in the border, Portugal's Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Ana Abrunhosa, told EFE.SOUNDBITES OF PORTUGAL'S MINISTER OF TERRITORIAL COHESION ANA ABRUNHOSA: “As you know, our border concerns us and the aim of the Ministry is to promote the balanced development of the whole country with a special concern for the territories of the interior, which are also cross-border (territories).”“Vilar Formoso and Fuentes de Oñoro are functionally linked together. It makes perfect sense that the strategy of Vilar Formoso and Fuentes de Oñoro are thought together and will also allow a different treatment in terms of European funds, by national and European authorities, and therefore they have the greatest interest that Vilar Formoso and Fuentes de Oñoro become an Eurocity and that we promote their development together, joint projects, creation of synergies, avoiding duplication of equipment and infrastructure.”“The only way for these projects to join people from both sides of the border is that these projects benefit both at the same time and, therefore, these projects have to do with identity, with their culture and also they have to bring innovation, modernity and new people. We know that in some cases it is very difficult to reverse the growth trend, but we have to ensure that these people have quality of life and access to goods and services.”
