Speaking to MEPs in Brussels, Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen says his country's war with Hamas is "not just the war of the state of Israel," but concerns the "free world". Cohen's address comes more than a month after Hamas' deadly attack on Israel, in which at least 1,400 people were killed. In retribution for the attack, Israeli forces have been conducting air and ground raids in Gaza, where the Hamas-run health ministry says more than 10,500 people have died. SOUNDBITE

The world should prepare to face increasingly intense heatwaves, the United Nations warns, as countries across the Northern Hemisphere reel from soaring temperatures. "This is entirely consistent with the science of global warming and IPCC reports", says John Nairn, a senior extreme heat advisor at the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO), tells reporters during a briefing in Geneva. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says the world is racing toward a climate change disaster and dismissed the global response as woefully inadequate. He says current climate policies are taking the world to a 2.8-degree temperature rise by the end of the century. "That spells catastrophe. Yet the collective response remains pitiful," Guterres tells a news conference. SOUNDBITE
