Paul Whelan, a former US marine detained in Russia on accusations of espionage, arrives in court in Moscow. Whelan, who was arrested in December after allegedly receiving state secrets, maintains that he has been framed and that he took a USB drive from an acquaintance thinking it contained vacation photos. A Russian security guard tackled an American diplomat to the ground outside of the US Embassy in Moscow and wrestled with him on the ground for at least a minute. Russian security services allege that the diplomat, named Daniel Van Dyken, was suspected of using his diplomatic status within the third secretary of the political department of the US Embassy as a cover and carrying out spy missions for the CIA in Russia.
The White House sends its condolences to the victims of a "terrible" shooting at a concert hall in the Russian capital Moscow. "Our thoughts are with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby tells reporters.
