  • Shopping Center in Flames after Melbourne Plane Crash Kills Five

    A plane flying from Melbourne to Australia's King Island crashed into a shopping centre in Essendon, a suburb of northern Melbourne on Tuesday, killing all five people on board, including the pilot, shortly after taking off from Melbourne's Essendon Airport around 9 AM local time on Tuesday. According to local police, The twin-engine Beechcraft B200 Super King Air is suspected to have suffered engine failure. The plane crashed into the back of a furniture store and a JB Hi-Fi store in the DFO shopping centre, leaving the parking area in flames and killing the pilot, identified as US citizen Max Quartermain, and all four passengers, who have also been identified as US citizens. Pilot Max Quartermain was the co-owner of Corporate and Leisure Aviation, the company which operated the plane. He had a perfect 38-year safety record. According to unconfirmed reports, there were no casualties on the ground. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident.

Travelling from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the aircraft had been carrying 77 people, including the Brazilian Chapecoense football team, at the time of the crash. The team was set to play against Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana finals in Medellin, Wednesday. 6 people, including three players, two members of the crew, and one journalist, have survived the crash.

  • Emergency Teams Search Wreckage of Colombia Plane Crash

    Emergency services continued searching the wreckage of the fatal plane crash near El Cerro Gordo in Colombia on Tuesday. Travelling from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the aircraft had been carrying 77 people, including the Brazilian Chapecoense football team, at the time of the crash. The team was set to play against Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana finals in Medellin, Wednesday. 6 people, including three players, two members of the crew, and one journalist, have survived the crash. The British Aerospace 146 short-haul aircraft it went down at 8 PM local time. The flight's destination, Jose Maria Cordova International Airport near Medellin, stated that they received an emergency call from the plane about electrical failures while flying over the municipalities of La Ceja and La Union before losing contact. Some 22 football players from the Brazilian team were aboard the flight, with a further 22 sports journalists onboard. The investigation has revealed that the plane did not explode on impact, leading investigators to focus on why the plane had such a small amount of fuel. The black boxes were recovered in good condition and the investigation is ongoing.
