North Triangle asylum agreement and the US can stop migrant trafficking

Description

Tegucigalpa, Dec 10 (EFE / EPA).- The migratory asylum cooperation agreements that the United States has reached with the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras) can dissuade people who pay to traffickers to migrate, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).(CAMERA: Uriel Rodríguez)IMAGES: INTERVIEW WITH JORGE PERAZA, HEAD OF MISSION OF IOM FOR EL SALVADOR, GUATEMALA AND HONDURAS.TRANSLATION: "It can certainly discourage what I would classify as an irregular migration that uses the smuggler, the figure of the human trafficker, the way we are seeing it" "We are still trying to have more information about what is the Guatemala-United States bilateral agreement that is the one that has already been activated, however, there is still information on the matter that at the moment is still handled mainly at the level of the authorities of both countries " "Unfortunately, the recourse of refuge, of asylum has been abused precisely by migrant smuggler networks, and then it has come to a point in which a certain percentage of asylum seekers are not people who really comply with the profile established in the convention that was created to address this issue, and instead they are economic migrants. So, it is certainly a challenge for the region because it is not just the case of Honduras. First by making sure of having a solid concept of refuge, of asylum, according to the commitments that the states have acquired. Then it is essential to continue working so that there is a system of compliance with international rights and protection of persons."
