BMW i is preparing to launch the next generation of solely electrically powered models. Three of the brand’s electric models are currently going through a key phase of their series development process at the BMW Group’s winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. Together with the BMW iX3 already due to go on sale next year, the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT, being brought to market in 2021, are also completing an intensive test programme. Within the framework of comprehensive vehicle testing, their drive and suspension components are being put to the test under extreme weather and road conditions. The testing area situated at the edge of the Arctic Circle provides the ideal requirements for this purpose. On the icy surfaces of frozen lakes, on snow and in the bitter cold, the electric motors, the high-voltage batteries and the power electronics of BMW eDrive technology as well as the suspension control systems are demonstrating their high level of performance and reliability.
Detailed model update for the BMW iX3 optimises the car’s sporting aura and the driving pleasure it offers, as well as ease of operation and the premium character of the interior. With a brand-typical performance characteristics with sovereign noiselessness and exemplary efficiency, the drive system of the new BMW iX3 ensures fascinating and locally emission-free driving pleasure. The purely electrically powered SAV is the first model to use the latest, now fifth, generation of BMW eDrive technology. It comprises an electric motor developed in-house by the BMW Group, the power electronics, particularly advanced charging technology and a model-specific high-voltage battery.The BMW iX3 is thus the pioneer for the latest development stage of electric drive systems within the BMW Group. The fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology is highly scalable and can therefore be used in different vehicle concepts - initially in the BMW iX and BMW i4 and soon also in electrified models from other series.
The BMW iX is ready for series production and is due to arrive on the world’s roads from November 2021. The BMW Group’s new technology flagship combines locally emission-free driving pleasure, sporting agility and a compelling operating range with a character profile dedicated squarely to sustainability. With its trailblazing design and an interior devoted to luxurious spaciousness, the BMW iX embodies a fresh new take on the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility, this model is based on a new toolkit for the future, whose vast potential for innovations in the areas of automated driving, operation, connectivity and digital services translates into a premium mobility experience unparalleled in this segment.
Understated blue accents for both the exterior and interior of the new BMW iX3 allude to the presence of its electric drive system. Combined with clearly structured controls, high-quality materials and stylishly designed surfaces create the premium interior ambience typically associated with an SAV. Another hallmark quality of this breed of car – versatility – is reflected in spaciousness on a par with that of conventionally powered BMW X3 model variants. Thanks to the 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, load capacity can be increased from 510 to a maximum of 1,560 litres, as required.The debut of BMW IconicSounds Electric in the BMW iX3 providesacoustic feedback to enrichen the electric driving experience by lending it emotional depth. Load changes are signalled by a smoothly modulated sound, and recuperation during overrun and braking is accompanied by gently filtered acoustic response, meaning that every driving state is replicated by a matching sound pattern.
