"We are going to strictly guarantee your human rights just like you have to strictly respect the laws in our country," says a government official as hundreds of Honduran migrants brave Guatemala's Suchiate River, on the border with Mexico, in an effort to enter the country and eventually reach the US.
Migrants continue crossing between the United States and Mexico by wading through the Rio Bravo river (known as Rio Grande in the US), as the US struggles to stem a massive influx of undocumented people, many of them from Haiti. IMAGES
They crossed the Rio Grande into the United States without papers and clutching their young children. Now, thousands of Central American immigrants face myriad challenges from finding work to threats of deportation, all without speaking any English. A month after meeting three undocumented families in Texas, AFP catches up with them as they adjust to their new lives near New York.
