Saudi Arabia has allowed adult women to travel without permission and granted them more control over family matters, further eroding a heavily criticised male guardianship system at a time of heightened scrutiny over the kingdom's human rights record.

This weekend saw a first for Saudi Arabia, as women were allowed to vote and stand in the municipal elections. It is seen as a tiny progress for women’s rights in this ultra-conservative monarchy.
