Unlocking New Potentials - How FogHorn and Porsche Leverage Edge Computing for Vehicles

Description

As computing power is now coming closer to the „edge“, meaning that computing is done at or near the source of the data instead of relying on the cloud in a data center somewhere, vehicles are increasingly able to handle data and compute themselves. This opens up completely new possibilities and applications for edge computing in vehicles. As part of the Stuttgart-based innovation platform Startup Autobahn, Porsche and US-based edge computing startup FogHorn joined forces to develop a prototypical edge solution that enables the keyless and easy unlocking of a Porsche vehicle.

  • Company Tests Durability of the Samsung Galaxy S7

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge this week, it took only a couple of days for the world to get a look at how much damage the new smartphones can take beyond scratching. SquareTrade, a smartphone insurance company, took the brand-new Galaxy S7 phones and tested their water resistance and durability against falling, tumbling and bending. The S7 phones fared much better underwater than the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus and SquareTrade says they're the most water-resistant phone it has tested. As far as the S7’s glass front and back are concerned, the corners and back reportedly break easily. After a run inside a device known as the TumbleBot, the S7 and S7 Edge had significant damage on the back and corners, with minor scratches on the screen.

  • Security Flaws In Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Found By Hackers

A group of experienced hackers called project Zero, Google's team of expert security researchers devoted a week to find as many serious security holes in Samsung's Galaxy S6 Edgeas they can. The team reported its findings to Samsung, which had already patched eight out of 11 of the flaws. The three unpatched issues are due to be fixed in November, and are not as severe as the rest. While most of these security holes were promptly fixed by Samsung, it's still worrisome that a dedicated team can find so many bugs in such a short timespan. Samsung's quickness in resolving most of them was promising. In August, Samsung and Google announced they would issue updates to their devices more frequently to address security issues.
