Overall winner at the first attempt - following on from its habitual success in motorsport, the Mercedes-AMG performance and sports car brand has now pulled off a similar victory in the area of production: the AMG hand-built engine production facility at the company's headquarters in Affalterbach is 2019 "Factory of the Year". With this coveted title, bestowed by A.T. Kearney, the specialist journal "Produktion" and SV Veranstaltungen, a jury of experts rewarded the work of the engine Manufaktur (hand-finishing section) in Affalterbach. The new AMG four-cylinder high-peformance engine M139 is built on a new production line here. With an output of up to 310 kW (421 hp), the completely newly developed 2.0-litre engine is the world's most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder in series production. On board the A-Class, CLA and CLA Shooting Brake compact models, it enables performance and driving dynamics on a par with high-calibre sports cars.

The most powerful AMG V8 series engine of all time, the most expressive design, the most elaborate aerodynamics, the most intelligent material mix, the most distinctive driving dynamics: For the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (combined fuel consumption 12.8 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 292 g/km), the Affalterbach designers have pulled out all the stops when it comes to the art of vehicle design. The new super sports car perfectly embodies the brand's rich tradition in motorsport, as well its many years of expertise in developing complete vehicles which impress in every respect. The result is an output of 537 kW (730 hp) from a V8 engine with a 'flat' crankshaft, combined with active aerodynamics and a design which stems directly from the current AMG GT3 racing car.
The four-cylinder will provide in the compact models of Mercedes-AMG in two power levels for highly agile propulsion: with 310 kW (421 hp) as so-called S-model and with 285 kW (387 hp) in the basic variant The AMG performance models with V8 engine already proven and meets even better the individual customer requirements.In addition to the pure performance figures, the new engine impresses with its spontaneous response. For this purpose, the torque curve was elaborately tuned ("torque shaping"): The maximum value of 500 Newton meters (480 Newton meters in the basic version) is available in the range of 5,000-5,250 / min (4,750-5,000 / min in the basic version). With this design, the AMG engineers achieved a naturally aspirated engine-like power delivery that further enhances the emotional driving experience. The engine developers were able to realize a dynamically increasing torque curve in the lower engine speed range and thus improve drivability. The growing torque at higher speeds increases the revving of the engine. In addition, the high maximum speed (up to 7,200 rpm) emphasizes the sports engine character of the M 139.
With an output of up to 310 kW (421 PS), the completely newly developed Mercedes-AMG 2.0-litre M 139 engine is the world’s most powerful four-cylinder engine in series production. With this engine, Mercedes-AMG has even exceeded the previously most powerful M 133 by 30 kW (40 PS). Maximum torque has also increased from 475 to up to 500 Nm. With an output per litre of up to 155 kW (211 PS), the new Mercedes-AMG high-performance turbo engine even ranks ahead of many well-known super-sports car engines. The new, highly efficient powerpack is produced on an innovative production line in Affalterbach, on the “One Man, One Engine” principle.
