Kabul, Feb 18 (EFE), (Camera: Jawad Jalali).- Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission on Tuesday announced incumbent President Ashraf Ghani as the winner of presidential elections held in September with more than 50 percent of the total votes, after months of delay and recounts.The IEC declared "Muhammad Ashraf Ghani, who won 923,592 votes or 50.64 percent of votes of the voters of the country, as winner and elected president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," in a statement read out by its president Hawa Alam Nuristani.Ghani's main challenger Abdullah Abdullah, currently the country's chief executive, was second with 39.52 percent of the votes, while former warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar was a distant third with 3.85 percent.FOOTAGE OF THE AFGHANISTAN'S INDEPENDENT ELECTION COMMISSION (IEC) ANNOUNCING THE VICTORY OF PRESIDENT ASHRAF GHANI.
The Afghan Taliban has reportedly chosen a new leader to replace the late supreme leader, Mullah Omar, whose 2013 death was confirmed this week, although the leadership change has led to the postponement of peace talks between the insurgents and Afghan government. Mana Rabiee reports.
