This Christmas tradition would even give the Grinch the chills! A half goat and half demon being called the Krampus was out and about at the Munich Christmas markets on Sunday, making sure all the girls and boys have been good this year. The tradition comes from folk legends originating in the eastern Alps, where Krampus is portrayed as a beast that punishes misbehaving children. The procession, known as the 'Krampus Run', is an annual event where some attendees wearing spooky Krampus suits make their way through crowds, occasionally picking out individuals and ‘beating’ them.
Central Europe certainly has its fair share of strange traditions, but one of the strangest takes place around Christmas time. Dozens of men dress up in demon-like costumes, wearing animal fur, wooden masks, an assortment of horns, and a motley collection of bells, whips, and chains. These monsters are two types of demons from pagan folklore - the Krampus and the Perchten.
