He is a different sort of environmentalist than is typical in documentaries. A daring ship’s captain with no fear of danger, Watson and his crews have confronted illegal whaling vessels from Europe to the Southern Ocean, seal hunters in Canada, and shark finners in Central America. The marine activist is a friend of direct confrontation on the high seas. If that meant ramming a boat he believed was engaged in poaching, then by god, that boat was getting rammed. Impervious to threats, with more than one nation issuing warrants for his arrest, Watson continues to intervene on behalf of his “clients”: the ocean creatures endangered by overfishing and illegal activities on the high seas. People gather in front of the Danish parliament in Copenhagen to call for the release of anti-whaling activist Paul Watson. Watson founded Sea Shepherd and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (CPWF) and is known for radical tactics, including confrontations with whaling ships at sea. He was arrested on July 21 on the basis of an Interpol "Red Notice" after Japan accused him of causing damage to one of its whaling ships in the Antarctic two years earlier and causing injury. IMAGES
