Heavy fighting in Sudan has led to 700,000 people being internally displaced since the middle of April, the United Nations says, adding the figure had doubled in a week. "There are now more than 700,000 internally displaced by the fighting which began on April 15," Paul Dillon, spokesman for the International Organization for Migration says. IMAGES
The fighting in Sudan has caused more than 100,000 people to cross the border, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado says. UNHCR, the United Nations' refugee agency, is estimating that more than 800,000 people could potentially flee to neighbouring countries as the conflict between Sudan's regular army and paramilitaries continues. The Lebanese pound sinks to a historic low against the dollar on the parallel market, as banks in the crisis-hit country resumed an open-ended strike. The Lebanese pound, officially pegged at 15,000 to the dollar, was trading at 100,000 against the greenback on Tuesday, dealers said -- a dizzying plunge from 1,507 before the economic crisis hit in 2019.
