President Joe Biden will give a primetime television address this week to mark the one year anniversary of the US lockdown ordered to mitigate the Covid-19 pandemic. In the address on Thursday, Biden will "discuss the many sacrifices the American people have made over the last year, and the grave loss communities and families across the country have suffered," says White House press secretary Jen Psaki. The Pentagon has upped the number of National Guard members it wants present at President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration by 4,000. CNN reports the Pentagon on Friday authorized up to 25,000 National Guard members, marking an increase from the 21,000 troops authorized a day earlier. Law enforcement in Washington, DC, and around the country is bracing for more extremist violence after the deadly insurrection at the Capitol last week. The DOD announced Tuesday that Guardsmen and women will be armed. Law enforcement is monitoring phones and other communications in an all-out effort to track individuals to ensure they do not travel to Washington.
Rumors have been flying about what, if anything, President Donald Trump will do during the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. According to Business Insider, one such story making the rounds is that Trump will visit his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. In fact, a Scottish newspaper reported Sunday that a US military plane sometimes used by Trump is scheduled to arrive at an airport near the resort. But on Tuesday, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon put an end to such speculation. Sturgeon said the country's national lockdown, which includes a prohibition on non-essential travel, applies to Trump as well.
In April 2020, a coronavirus stimulus check of $2,000 was sent to most American adults. Eight months later, Congress agreed on a $900 billion coronavirus relief bill. The new bill would send out another stimulus check, this time worth $600. On Tuesday, Pres. Donald Trump said the checks should be worth $2,000. According to Insider polling, 72% of Trump supporters think $600 is too small.
President-elect Joe Biden is starting to lay out a blueprint for another pandemic aid package. According to Business Insider Biden indicated support for included more stimulus checks. Biden also wants public health funds, and enhanced unemployment insurance. But his ambitions will collide with Senate Republicans. Senate Republicans may not be inclined to back more aid spending.
