Bangkok Metropolitan Administration-run pawn shops have lowered interest rates to 0.50 percent and extended the pawning period as an effort to help cash-strapped households to strive for their financial crisis caused by the coronavirus disease (COVD-19). Amid the pandemic economy halt, cash-strapped Thais flocked to pawnshops seeking for loans by selling off and pawn their valuables such as jewelry, gold, televisions, stereos sets, electronic devices as well as households kitchenware, including pots and pans, while many Thais have been forced out of work trading their profession tools for quick cash. An estimated million people in Thailand have been forced out of work and prompted to lose their jobs after the vast numbers of businesses have been shut down due to the pandemic.
