The United States will deploy 1,500 additional troops to the border with Mexico, the Pentagon says, ahead of an expected surge of migrants when Covid-era restrictions are lifted next week. "For 90 days, these 1,500 military personnel, who will be sourced from the active duty component, will fill critical capability gaps, such as ground-based detection and monitoring, data entry, and warehouse support," spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder tells reporters during a press conference. The Pentagon has issued a notice to commanders known as a 'warning order.' According to CNN, officials say it's to begin planning to draw down the number of troops in Afghanistan to 2,500 troops and 2,500 in Iraq by Jan 15. US military commanders expect President Donald Trump to issue a formal order to begin further troop withdrawal before Trump leaves office on January 20th. The Pentagon appears ready to remove thousands more US troops from Afghanistan and Iraq. However, it also indicates Trump may fall short of fulfilling one of his core promises to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan before he leaves office. Multiple top military officials, including former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, said conditions were not yet right for complete troop withdrawal.
A US contractor was killed and five American service members, plus another US contractor were injured after a drone struck a military base in northeast Syria, the Pentagon says. Kabul, Oct 3 (EFE/EPA).- At least two civilians were killed and three were wounded on Sunday in a blast near a mosque in in the Afghan capital Kabul where a prayer ceremony was being held for the death of the Taliban spokesperson's mother.“Our initial information suggests at least two people martyred and three people injured in today’s blast,” Taliban Interior Ministry spokesman, Qari Saeed Khosty told Efe, adding that the information was still preliminary and the death toll could change in the coming hours.The attack took place shortly after 4pm local time near the entrance of the Eid Gah mosque, where many civilians had gathered.
