Portugal returns to the polls amid the pandemic

Description

Lisbon (Portugal), Jan 21 (EFE), (Camera: Cynthia de Benito/Paula Fernández).- The lockdown decreed amid a soaring pandemic has slowed activity in Portugal but not its presidential elections, as the Portuguese are questioning whether it is the best time to go to the polls and hold campaign events. The elections remained marked for Sunday, January 24th, when more than 9 million voters will be able to leave their homes to cast their ballot.FOOTAGE OF AND STATEMENTS BY CITIZENS: ANSELMO, RUI DUARTE, DANIELSON.Anselmo"At this time of pandemic it is complicated, but it is something that should have been thought of earlier. There is not much to do now. In constitutional terms there can no longer be changes and from there we have to be subject to the conditions that exist and try to minimize the risk. But I think it was not the best time to hold elections.""There was no time to prepare things properly. There was not a great participation of people in the early voting process and on the other hand there are a series of logistical problems that could have been avoided if things were planned in advance as they should have been."Rui Duarte"There is still no way to vote digitally, which is what there should have been for quite some time. If we put in our fiscal data, if we put our data in the banks, I think it is a good way, and there should have been for some years now, a way to vote that is not face-to-face."Danielson"I think elections are always almost an obligation of the people, to choose who governs. At this moment I don't know if it will be the most favourable moment, because of covid and the pandemic situation we are facing.""The candidates campaigned enough to be known, and the campaigning they did beyond television should have been suspended with this very serious pandemic and lockdown situation."

  • Village tourism increases amid pandemic

Linhares da Beira (Portugal), 3 Oct (EFE), (Camera: Carlos García).- Rural tourism in uninhabited villages, where social distancing is imposed by the shortage of neighbors and not by the precautions due to the Covid, has become this year one of the star destinations of the Iberian Peninsula. The Portuguese "Aldeias Históricas", in the Central region of the country, had almost full occupation this summer. This is a network of twelve villages, some barely reaching a hundred inhabitants, which offer a plus in security that is increasingly appreciated by visitors to the big cities.FOOTAGE OF THE AREA AND SOUNDBITES BY PEDRO MACHADO, PRESIDENT OF THE PUBLIC ENTITY TOURISM CENTER, AND DALILA DIAS, MANAGER OF THE HISTORICAL VILLAGES OF PORTUGAL.TRANSLATIONS:Machado:1. "Rural tourism is synonymous of a perception of greater physical distance that guarantees greater security and today is proven a growing and consolidated revaluation of many of our establishments".2. "I guarantee that 2021 many Portuguese and Spanish will return to that experience they discovered in 2020 (village tourism) because of the pandemic. Because they stopped travelling to places that normally go to more distant places abroad and because they stopped going to the beaches that are more crowded".3. "Spain is our main foreign market, representing more than 30% of overnight stays (in the Central Portuguese region)".Dias:4. "When they opened the borders it seems that the Spanish were with the suitcase to go to Portugal. This was notorious and interesting and was feedback for our accommodation. That is, they had just arrived, the border opened at midnight, and that day Spaniards arrived. People perceive that here there is a capacity for distancing and what we ask is that tourists comply with the rules of the General Directorate of Health."

  • The homage to Amália amid the pandemic at the Teatro Real

Lisbon (Portugal), Sep 22 (EFE), (Camera: Cynthia de Benito).- The coronavirus may have disrupted the seating capacity, but will not disturb the intensity of the tribute to the centenary of Amália, the great diva of Fado, which hosts the Teatro Real in Madrid next Saturday. It's about making a virtue out of necessity. The event, the X International Fado Festival in Madrid, was intended to be the great commemoration abroad of the so-called "voice of Portugal", which was born 100 years ago.FOOTAGE OF THE FADO MUSEUM IN LISBON AND SOUNDBITES FROM FÁBIA REBORDÃO AND ANA MOURA, FADISTAS.TRANSLATION:REBORDÃO:"I am going to sing "Estranha forma de vida", which is one of the first songs Amália wrote, and therefore I chose that song, I recorded a video clip during the pandemic, at the beginning of the pandemic, I recorded it on my birthday, to offer it to all those who were in the first line, that was my way of paying homage. So I think that is going to be the icing on the cake of the concert, because it has different arrangements than Amália's, because I think we can change the form and not the content, I think the content should be kept. Therefore I am going to sing that song, "Estranha forma de vida" like so many others that I decided to pay homage to her especially in this year that is 100 years old". MOURA:"I think... I can talk about my case, right? I took a look at the box office and you can see that it is already being composed, and therefore, I feel happy to feel that interest from people, and the expectation is... for example, I was in France now and I felt that people were eager to hear music and to feel the comfort that music can give them. And therefore that is my expectation: that people feel related to the music I have to help them, and to the comfort that I can give them through the music that I sing."
